Caldwell 49 - Rosette Nebula (Click on photo and then click again for a full resolution image).

Caldwell 49

Caldwell 49`

Caldwell 49 - The Rosette Nebula - aka SH2-275

The Rosette Nebula which is located in the constellation of Monoceros (The Unicorn), is a region of ionized Hydrogen gas and dust in our galaxy, giving rise to intense new star formation.
The largest stars contained in the NGC 2244 open cluster in the center of the nebula are burning so bright and furiously hot, that they have blown much of the Hydrogen gas away from themselves away from Earth to create the somewhat donut appearance.
The Rosette Nebula lies at a distance of about 5,000 light-years from Earth and spans about 130 light-years across.
