Comet NEOWISE - (Comet C/2020 F3)
Comet NEOWISE officially known as Comet C/2020 F3 is a long-period comet that was discovered by astronomers using the Near-Earth Object Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) space telescope on March 27th 2020 when it was 160 million miles from Earth.
The comet made its closest approach to the Sun at 27 million miles on July 3rd, 2020 and was closest to Earth on July 23rd at 64 million miles. For comparison, the Earth is about 93 million miles from the Sun.
Prior to this most recent encounter with the Sun, the comet's orbital period was about 4,400 years, but the comet's July encounter with the Sun provided it with a gravitational boost-assist lengthening the orbital period to 6,700 years.
