NGC 6995- The Bat Nebula
NGC 6995 - The Bat Nebula is the eastern portion of the the much larger Veil Nebula located in the constellation of Cygnus (The Swan) about 200 light-years from Earth. The Veil Nebula is the visible remnant of a supernova explosion of a star that was 20 times more massive than the Sun that exploded about 10,000 years ago. The shock waves from the explosion that is still expanded through space is ionizing the atoms in the interstallar material which is what causes the material to glow in different wavelengths of visible light. The bight star just above the nebula is 52 cygni and has a radius that is over twelve times larger than the Sun.
